Just as we were finishing postproduction of Una
Causa Noble,
the issue of immigration joined the war in Iraq as headline news. One
aspect of the immigration issue is the fact that the U.S. military
has been attempting to enlist Mexicans to fight in Iraq,
often with the promise of expedited citizenship. This subject
has only recently been receiving major media attention. On
Sunday, June 10, NBC News aired a report that highlighted this
topic and
was remarkably similar to our movie. This report
also featured two individuals who have become quite active in trying
to help young Hispanics carefully consider all the facts before
deciding to join the military.
One of these individuals, Fernando Suarez
del Solar (www.guerreroazteca.org), became
an activist after
his son Jesus was killed in Iraq in March, 2003. Since
then, Fernando
has traveled around the world, including several trips to Iraq,
to protest the war and the recruitment of young Hispanics. On June
25, we met with Fernando, showed him Una Causa Noble,
and offered to join him in any speaking engagements where he thought
our movie might help reinforce his story.
The other person featured in the NBC story
was Carlos
Castillo, a teacher at Roosevelt
High School in Los Angeles.
Carlos has banned recruiters from his classrooms, where students
are often their prime targets. On June 23,
we showed Una Causa Noble to two
of Carlos’ classes, followed by a discussion of the
issues addressed by the movie. Although we
never intended Una
Causa Noble for an audience of 16 year olds, we were amazed
at
the attentiveness and feedback we received.
Following the experience with Fernando and Carlos,
we have realized the potential of
Una Causa Noble to provide for interesting discussion
and debate among young people
who are faced with seemingly tempting
offers from the military. We would welcome the opportunity
to show Una Causa Noble to other students and any community
groups that
are trying to help young people make more well-informed
decisions. We can be contacted at: info@UnaCausaNoble.com - Gail
